session #15

my funny valentine

story

supporting players

  • Whitney Hagas Matsumoto: Age: 28. A man who appeared before Faye as her friendly lawyer when she woke up from her cold sleep... and turned out to be a conman and a "Madam Killer." He took advantage of Faye and unloaded all of her debts onto her, later getting plastic surgery to hide his identity, as shown when the two are reunited. His model is George Clooney.

  • Doctor Bacchus: Age: 45. The talkative doctor who awakened Faye from her cold sleep... or so it seemed. Given that he is Whitney's uncle and that he later is shown riding in a patrol ship, it seems like he's actually just a conman.

  • Ms. Manly: Age: 29. Dr Bacchus's collaborator and secretary. She's quite skilled with machines. While her outward appearance is quite beautiful, nothing is known about her inner feelings.

key instruments

  • Television-like Washing Machine: A machine that was in Faye's room when she awoke from her cold sleep. While she thought it was a television, it's actually a fully-automated washer/dryer unit.

  • PHS Thermometer: This electronic thermometer was also in Faye's room when she woke up. The user places the extendable tip in their mouth and a voice announces their body temperature, pulse, and blood pressure.

  • Frozen Fish: A trophy fish Jet caught as evidence and froze in order to eat later. After he and Ed checked the dioxin levels, this idea was abandoned.

dr bacchus: doctor or grifter?

Hajime Ichigaya

Doctor Bacchus.

While he seems like a character who only exists to deliver exposition to a recently-awakened Faye, his talkativeness and impact make him an unforgettable character. Let’s have a look at some of his dialogue:

“My name is Doctor Bacchus. Bacchus is said to have drowned more people than Neptune, yes, that Bacchus. You knew that though, right? However, I actually used to be an alcoholic! Bacchus being drowned by Bacchus! That’s a good one! Hahahahaha! Ok, open your mouth!” (His dialogue right after Faye wakes up)

“We just finished the paperwork. If something were to happen to him, his entire inheritance would go to you. Just put your finger here and it’ll all be yours: His debt and his inheritance, that is.” (His dialogue after Hagas Matsumoto died)

“Who are you? Where did you come from and where are you going? Everyone worries about these things at some point. Mmm-hmm. However, those things the young worry about. At a certain age, the only people thinking about these things don’t have anything to do.” (After reuniting with Faye after three years)

With an unusual amount of persuasiveness, a bright mind, and a cold sense of judgment, he has all the makings of a conman. And indeed, it seems like he’s nothing more than a grifter. It seems like the only reason he woke Faye up from her cold sleep was to collect on the cost of preserving her. By the way, services in America that can put you in a cold sleep are quite expensive.

While he seems to have been a scammer from the beginning, one question remains: We know that Faye was put into cold sleep because her injuries couldn’t be healed at the time, so who exactly was it that healed her?

In the end, since there aren’t any other episodes with Doctor Bacchus, we’ll never know.

  • Dr Bacchus certainly seems like a doctor when Faye first awakens, although his secretary seems to be the one operating his machine.

  • Bacchus meets with Hagas Matsumoto. No doubt, they're meeting to discuss how they're going to trick Faye.

  • Only giving Faye the good news while shackling her with debt seems befitting of a conman.

  • Three years later, he's seen again flying in a patrol ship. His relationship with Hagas Matsumoto is also revealed.

  • Dr Bacchus's secretary, Manly, is only 29. Despite her young age, she's very-educated on medicines and machinery and is able to confidently pose as both a nurse and a policewoman.

  • In the end, Bacchus and Manly disappear in a cloud of smoke. Or more likely a smokescreen.
