key instruments

  • Briefcase: The case that Hakim put Ein in for transport. A round tire is attached to each of the four corners and it has a 4-digit dial lock. The machine inside of the case seems to be a life support system.

  • Net Gun: Likely uses a blank cartridge to fire a four-pronged net. An essential tool for catching bounties, it can be used on anything from a stray dog to a strange alien organism. However, it isn't very reliable when dealing with faster targets. Also appears in Sessions 11 and 14.

explanation

talk about vincent volaju

what is he trying to seek out and kill?

Hajime Ichigaya

The bio terrorist behind the tanker explosion that killed 72 in Alba City.

With his long, unkempt hair and his black clothing, he has a menacing appearance. While he has no compunction about killing people, he doesn't take pleasure in it either. There seems to be no reason given for this.

A former Special Forces soldier and nanomachine weapon test subject, he was sent to the battlefield carrying a counter-nanomachine vaccine. However, when he saw the indiscriminate carnage unleashed on the battlefield by the butterflies, he lost his memories and everything except for his life.

His ultimate goal is to release a nanomachine virus on Halloween night in Alba City. However, why he wants to do this is ultimately unknown.

What is he trying to gain by standing atop the corpses of countless people?

an engrossing bebop to offset session 01

A woman who appears before Spike multiple times as he purses a 300-million Woolong bounty, Electra has the hurried eyes of someone whose back is against the wall.

She was ordered by the military to hunt down and kill Vincent, her former lover. There's no doubt that her plan was to use her position in an attempt to save Vincent, however.

However, Vincent didn't hesitate for a second to pull the trigger. This caused her to view of Vincent, who had one supported her, to change.

Thus, she decides to take down Vincent, even if it kills her. Perhaps this was in order to fulfill her duty as a soldier. And so, the fated moment approaches...

it actually exists! tiny bird fortune telling

Hajime Ichigaya

Now then, the tiny bird fortune telling method that Hakim gets caught up in while chasing Ein is something that actually exists in Hong Kong!!

Well, perhaps it’s not so easy to find in modern Hong Kong. These days, you’re mostly likely to find small bird fortune telling in the Yau Ma Tei area of the Kowloon Peninsula, particularly around the Tin Hau Temple Complex. Various types of fortune tellers can be found in this area, with people using everything from turtle shells to birthdays to palm lines.

As an aside, the pet shop owner is eating noodles, because most Hong Kongers get their carbs from noodles instead of rice. Furthermore, the game that the men are playing while Spike and Hakim are chasing Ein is Chinese Chess. While this story is full of “Hong Kong-esque” action, it’s these little details that really contribute to this Session.

  • People playing Xiangqi (Chinese Chess) outdoors. This kind of scene is common in Hong Kong, although usually at night.

  • The tiny bird fortune teller's space. From the looks of things, he's able to employ a variety of different fortune telling methods.

  • This type of tiny bird fortune telling involves a simple choice between cards with "Yes" or "No" written on them. Any number of different varieties of cards must exist as well.

bruce lee's influence is at the heart of bebop

“Cowboy Bebop” is full of homages to Bruce Lee. From Spike’s mastery of Jeet Kun Do to various small scenes and gimmicks, Lee’s influence can be seen throughout the series. Let’s take a look at some of examples:

Session 1 "Asteroid Blues": Spike’s training sequence is an homage to Lee’s training scene in “Enter the Dragon” (1973). Particularly the shot when he extends his leg horizontally moves it around were inspired by this movie. The fight in the café is an homage to his fight with Chuck Norris in “Way of the Dragon” (1973).

Session 2 "Stray Dog Strut":
Adbul Hakim, who appears as a bounty in this episode, is modeled after Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, who appears in “Game of Death” (1979). When Spike is gathering information, Spike finds a pair of nunchaku at a weapon shop. “The chain is long. Are they based on the ones in ‘Way of the Dragon?’” he asks. It seems like they’re a replica of the ones Lee used in the movie. The reason for the length of the chain is demonstrated in “Way of the Dragon,” in which Lee uses double nunchaku. The long chains allow Lee to spin the nunchaku one-handed during combat.

Session 8 "Waltz for Venus": When Spike is teaching martial arts to Roco, he explains that your heart must “be like water,” something Lee is famous for saying.

Session XX "Mish-mash Blues":
Spike says that he looks to Lee as his spiritual master.

Additionally, Lee’s influence can be seen in Spike’s attack patterns and footwork, which perfectly capture the grace of Lee’s movements.

  • Training that requires you to move your leg while it's raised in the air. Without a strong sense of balance, something like this would be very difficult.

  • Using a step to effortlessly parry an incoming attack is one of Lee's signature moves and shows the gap in ability between Spike and Hakim.

  • The battle in the stone-paved area mirrors the colosseum death match in "The Way of the Dragon."

  • A pair of nunchaku sold a weapons shop. It's too bad that we don't get to see Spike use them.

  • Hakim's name and appearance are inspired by a character with the same name who appears in the Bruce Lee movie "Game of Death."

  • Spike's side kick in the opening credits has an identical motion to Bruce Lee's.
